Data & Methodology
How AuctionAsk sources, processes and verifies the auction data behind every artist profile, price chart and market statistic.
AuctionAsk is a fine-art market-intelligence platform. We aggregate publicly reported auction results from leading international auction houses into a single, searchable database of roughly 4 million auction lot records covering about 445,000 artists and 650+ auction houses. This page explains where that data comes from, how we process it, what our proprietary metrics mean, and the limits of what the data can tell you.
Where our data comes from
Our records are compiled from publicly reported auction results published by major international houses β including Christie's, Sotheby's, Phillips and Bonhams β alongside many regional and specialist auction houses worldwide. Each record reflects a lot as it was offered at auction: the work's title, artist attribution, medium, dimensions where available, sale date, auction house, and the hammer or realized price as reported by the selling house.
Coverage & scale
- ~4M+ auction lot records spanning multiple decades of sales.
- ~445K+ distinct artists with biographical and market data.
- 650+ auction houses across dozens of countries.
- Prices recorded in their original sale currency and normalized to USD for comparison.
How we process the data
Raw auction results are cleaned and standardized before they appear on the site. Our pipeline:
- Matches lots to a single canonical artist record to consolidate spelling and attribution variants.
- Normalizes sale prices to USD using historical exchange context so figures are comparable across markets and years.
- Associates catalogue images and lot details where the source provides them.
- Computes aggregate statistics per artist β total lots, highest sale, average price and sale history.
What is the Institutional Backing Score?
The Institutional Backing Score is a proprietary 0β100 indicator that estimates the breadth and depth of market support behind an artist. It is a composite heuristic derived from auction activity signals β such as the volume and consistency of sales and the level of the houses handling the work. It is intended as a relative comparison aid, not a valuation or a prediction of future prices.
What's free vs. subscription
Free
Artist biographies, nationality and movement, auction record counts, and summary statistics such as highest and average sale prices.
Subscription (PRO)
Full hammer/realized prices on individual lots, 10-year price-history charts, CSV export of auction history, and the price estimator.
How often is the data updated?
New auction results are added on an ongoing basis as sales are reported and processed. Artist aggregate statistics are recalculated as new records are ingested, so an artist's totals and averages reflect the most recent data in our database.
Limitations & disclaimer
- Records are aggregated from third-party reported results and may contain gaps, omissions or attribution errors.
- Prices are historical sale outcomes β they are not appraisals, current valuations, or guarantees of future value.
- AuctionAsk does not provide financial or investment advice. Nothing on this site is an offer to buy or sell.
- Always verify provenance, authenticity and condition with the relevant auction house or a qualified specialist before transacting.
